Stromnetz Berlin Strengthens Energy Supply in the North

Ground-Breaking Ceremony for the Wittenau Grid Node

Project profile

On 23 July 2025, Stromnetz Berlin lays the foundation stone for the new Wittenau grid node in Reinickendorf. The project replaces an older facility on the same site and is scheduled to enter operation in 2031. Its aim is to secure the electricity supply for households and businesses in Reinickendorf using modern, climate-friendly technology.

The facility will feature a green roof and provisions for a future solar installation. It will contain twice as many switchgear panels as the existing plant from 1968, which has reached the end of its service life. Architecturally, the new building takes inspiration from the old plant, including a brick façade characteristic of Berlin’s industrial structures. The new construction is already designed to accommodate future expansion.

Stromnetz Berlin is investing approximately 60 million euros in the project. Particular emphasis is placed on rapid and environmentally considerate construction: for example, a temporary construction road will be created on the site to relieve traffic on the busy Holzhauser Straße. Authorities and local residents are actively involved in the implementation.

The ceremonial ground-breaking brings together representatives from politics, business and the local community. In a festive setting, the project is officially launched – accompanied by speeches, the symbolic placement of a time capsule and a subsequent gathering with refreshments. The event highlights the significance of the new grid node for the energy future of northern Berlin and fosters a moment of connection between Stromnetz Berlin and the public.
