Following a lengthy and controversial debate, the Holocaust memorial comes into being in the heart of Berlin’s government district. In the presence of survivors, victims’ associations, the Federal President, the Federal Chancellor, the President of the Federal Council, the overwhelming majority of members of the Bundestag and international guests and journalists, this place of remembrance is turned over to the public.
