Deutschlandradio live at the Frankfurt Book Fair

Re:connected with a striking trade fair presence

Project profile

It is the first in-person book fair in two years. At long last, what belongs together is coming together once again: the national Deutschlandfunk and Deutschlandfunk Kultur radio programmes and their literature-loving listeners. Many things at the 73rd Frankfurt Industry Gathering in October 2021 will be different than usual. This is twice as true for the appearance of the two programme brands with the widest reach under the Deutschlandradio umbrella. This is because they are presenting themselves with a new stand design, created and implemented by artecom.
The project team secured the go-ahead for its concept following a pitch back in autumn 2020. The task was to elevate the appearances of the public broadcaster family at trade fairs and media forums to a more contemporary level using existing stand elements and to enhance them using flexible multimedia tools. artecom’s design approach at the time was to add volume to the basic graphic form of the signet – the so-called bar – and to expand it into the third dimension. The resulting architectural body makes it possible to structure the extremely varying stand geometries at the trade fairs in a practical way.
Just how well this works is something that the pandemic-related special stand format in Frankfurt will have to prove: A stand length of 30 metres contrasts with a stand width of just four metres. artecom overcomes the problem by splitting the stretched rectangle into three functional zones. Two cubes with penetrating wall panels encompass the stage and the adjacent auditorium. One of the cubes integrates the broadcasting technology and the FoH space, while the other provides work areas for the editorial staff – all in compliance with the stringent safety and hygiene regulations that are rigorously observed elsewhere. For instance, information relating to the stage programme is provided on the monitors installed along the aisles via QR code with the aim of minimising the time spent at these contact points. The supplementary people flow management system ensures that live broadcasts and recordings of talks and readings can be held with an audience as planned.
